Across the globe, Jews and Jewish communities are faced with problems that make them particularly vulnerable. Ethiopian- and Caucasus-Israelis came from cultures vastly different from Israeli society. For many of them, assimilation can be an overwhelming challenge. Sadly, many are becoming marginalized. Argentina’s economic crisis has impoverished thousands of Jews. Without assistance, they must choose between paying rent or buying food, clothing, and other basic necessities. Throughout Jewish communities, thousands of disabled Jews need special assistance. JDC is responding with funds and programs to enable overseas Jewish communities to help these and other vulnerable Jews so they may live self-sufficient lives in dignity and respect. In Israel, we have created a broad spectrum of programs such as PACT (Parents and Children Together) – an early childhood education program – to help vulnerable immigrant communities. We also have developed model programs for disabled Israelis such as adult group homes. Argentina’s Jewish community has received a massive influx of aid from JDC. Working with local Jewish organizations, we are providing welfare assistance to all those in need. We also are offering guidance and training so that the community may once again achieve self-sufficiency. In other communities, we utilize existing Jewish welfare services to extend aid to children and adults who live in abject poverty and to help the disabled who need homecare assistance and rehabilitative equipment such as wheelchairs. Learn more about how JDC is reaching out to Jewish communities worldwide to provide help and hope to their most vulnerable people. |
