Each summer, thousands of kids from across Central and Eastern Europe go to JDC sleep-away camps, where they learn Jewish culture and traditions, take part in sports and social activities, and gain a sense of Jewish identity and pride. Many of these campers have emerged from this experience and taken on significant lay and professional leadership roles in European communities that are now thriving after the devastation of the Holocaust and 60 years of religious suppression under communism.
It’s an inspiring story—filled with great promise for the future of Jewish community and in saving Jewish lives.
