You are invited to join a special mission where you will experience the beauty and resilience of the Philippines, dive into humanitarian and disaster relief work, and engage with the country’s varied and diverse Jewish community.

Since Typhoon Haiyan devastated the central region of the Philippines in November 2013, JDC has provided immediate relief and helped catalyze growth and recovery. Join JDC Ambassadors and Board members on this unique opportunity to explore disaster mitigation and grassroots development strategies with local leaders, and experience Filipino culture to the fullest.

Itinerary Highlights:

  • Travel with international development experts to better understand the impact of JDC’s disaster response and recovery effort following Typhoon Haiyan in 2013
  • Join our special scholar-in-resident who frames Jewish context to our international development work
  • Experience Filipino culture – eat fresh grilled fish, go on a sunset river cruise, visit off-the-grid islands, and navigate the motorbike-filled streets of Manila
  • Engage with government, local and international civil society partners and program beneficiaries who participated in JDC’s humanitarian work during and after the Typhoon
  • Learn about the unique history of the Filipino Jewish community & JDC’s role in its establishment during World War II
  • Participate in a Shabbaton with Manila’s small but vibrant Jewish community to explore issues of global Jewish responsibility and tikkun olam; learn how this community is giving back to its neighbors through humanitarian efforts in partnership JDC

Single Occupancy: $3,900 USD

Double Occupancy: $3,400 USD

Cost Includes: ground transportation, hotel accommodations, meals, site visits, guides, and processing fees; they do not include cost of airfare between countries or transatlantic flights. Costs represent real expenses for JDC.

Participation requires a meaningful gift (minimum $5,000 USD) per person to help support JDC’s GRID: Disaster Relief, Recovery, and Development Programs. JDC Board Members and 2019 Ambassadors are excluded from this requirement. Please contact us for more information.

About JDC In the Philippines:  The Jewish community’s connection to the Philippines runs deep; during World War II, the Island nation provided refuge for 1,305 European Jews as part of a historic rescue effort taken on by Filipino president Manuel Quezon, in partnership with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). This historic connection prompted JDC’s response to Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines in November 2013.

Applying nearly a century of relief expertise as the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, JDC mobilized within hours of the tragic typhoon to raise some $3.3 million dollars to help the survivors rebuild their lives. Within 48 hours, JDC allocated initial emergency relief funds and soon thereafter a scoping team of JDC professionals was on the ground. These efforts — developed in consultation with local authorities, the Filipino Jewish community, and our global partners —concentrated on the Philippines islands of Cebu, Bohol, Panay, and Palawan whose impoverished, already vulnerable populations were deeply impacted by the disaster. In response to the disaster, JDC leveraged its professional expertise in education, psychosocial support, livelihood recovery, public health, and disaster preparedness to bring longer-term relief to the Filipino people.
