Who We Are
For more than 20 years, JDC Jewish Service Corps (JSC) volunteers have helped galvanize Jewish communities around the world, enriching the lives of thousands of Jews. Volunteers’ lives and careers have been equally changed and enriched by their year of service.
The JDC JSC is a one-year overseas volunteer opportunity designed for enthusiastic, knowledgeable Jews of all ages to work in a Jewish community or in one of the over 70 countries in which JDC provides aid.
Volunteers are currently serving in Austria, Belarus, Ethiopia, Georgia, India, Moldova, Turkey, and Ukraine.
What We Do
Each JDC-JSC volunteer’s job description is tailored to an assessment of the overseas community’s resources and needs and an assessment of the individual's skills. In most placements, the volunteer will work to promote Jewish identity and community development by organizing and guiding others in Jewish educational, cultural, social, and religious programs. Some placements may emphasize work in JDC’s International Development Program (IDP) which serves non-sectarian as well as Jewish objectives.
In the past, volunteers' accomplishments have included:
India: Founding a community newspaper Kol India
Bulgaria: Developing a complete Jewish educational curriculum for Sunday schools in Sofia
Russia: Launching a Jewish family camp
Sri Lanka: Providing technical assistance in rebuilding playgrounds and schools following the 2004 tsunami.
Ukraine: Expanding the Warm Homes program to relieve social isolation among elderly Holocaust survivors.
