India Earthquake Relief In January 2001, an earthquake measuring over 7 on the Richter Scale struck India, leaving between 25-30,000 people dead, thousands injured and hundreds of thousands homeless. An estimated 15.5 million people out of a population of approximately 39 million in the region were affected by the quake, with losses estimated to be as great as $5 billion. Shortly thereafter, the Jewish Coalition for India Earthquake Relief was assembled.
