Chile Earthquake Relief
On February 27, 2010, Chile was struck by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which generated a tsunami and more than 100 aftershocks, causing extensive damage throughout the region. Official reports indicate over 500 deaths, and thousands of people are in need of shelter, medical assistance, food and water. A coalition of North American Jewish organizations has been formed to collect funds to assist quake victims.

The Jewish leadership of Chile has formed the Community Committee for the National Emergency to coordinate relief activities for the Jewish community of Chile as well as outreach on a non-sectarian basis. The Community Committee has received notice that the Jewish Coalition for Chile Relief and individual Coalition members have begun to raise funds to assist the victims of the disaster. Presently, the Community Committee is evaluating needs in the areas hit hardest by the quake and planning a long-term rebuilding and rehabilitation program.

Haiti Earthquake Relief
On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful to strike the Caribbean nation in 200 years. The death toll is in the hundreds of thousands; homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods have been wiped out. A coalition of 20 Jewish organizations has convened to respond to this large-scale humanitarian emergency. The coalition’s membership is engaging its wide network of international NGOs, Israeli organizations, and local agencies to provide direct relief and long-term development assistance to victims of the quake.Click here for more information on JCDR activities in Haiti.
