Blanket distribution in Dollo Ado refugee camp in Ethiopia
The Horn of Africa is currently experiencing the worst drought in 60 years. Famine has been declared in six regions of South Central Somalia, causing some 700,000 Somalis to flee to neighboring counties such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti for refuge. Over 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
The Jewish Coalition for East Africa Relief has formed with 17 members and is responding to the dire situation in Africa. Using its combined experience responding to disaster situations and partnerships with local NGO's, the Coalition is meeting immediate and long term needs in the Horn of Africa.
Thanks to the generous contribution of donors, the Coalition's response includes:
- Distributing meat to over 10,000 at-risk households in Kenya through the American Jewish World Service and their local partner, Northern Aid. The Coalition and AJWS are also subsidizing the school fees of 329 girls in drought stricken areas in order to ensure their continued education during this difficult time.
- Purchasing and distributing 2,500 blankets to Somali refugees as the temperatures are dropping through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. The Coalition's continued support is enabling JDC to provide nutritional supplements to 480 malnourished Somali refugees living in the Jijiga camp.
-Delivering life-saving bed nets to families seeking safety in refugee camps in conjunction with Nothing But Nets. The Coalition is supporting the purchase and distribution of 1,000 bed nets.
-Directly supporting the rehabilitation of malnourished children through nutrition and immunization programs in partnership with UNICEF
-Installing greenhouse farming kits through World Jewish Relief and their partner the Kenya Red Cross. The Coalition is helping to fund this long term solution to drought risk reduction by supporting 13 greenhouse kits.
