To mark Israel’s 65th anniversary, JDC helped Jews in Bucharest, Romania organize not one but four celebrations.
Last weekend, over 130 community members came together to sing Israeli songs at a special Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Independence Day) Oneg Shabbat at the JDC-supported Bucharest Jewish Community Center (JCC).
Then, on Sunday, Israel Day drew 150 participants of all ages to the JCC. Families viewed a photo exhibit on Israel and sampled Israeli falafel; then the adults took part in a discussion of Israel’s history and current events. Meanwhile, the children enjoyed holiday-themed arts and crafts activities, learned about remembrance and independence, and enjoyed a nature movie about Israel.
Monday evening was the really big show, with over 200 people taking part in "The White and Blue Street - Israel: 65 Years of Independence!"
An Israeli shuk (market) replete with delicious Israeli fare set the stage for the celebration; the JCC choir and individual performers filled the air with Israeli music, and participants came together to construct a large Israeli flag--using 65 pieces of paper to represent Israel's 65 years.
Not wanting to be left out of events, the JDC-supported JCCs in Oradea and Timisoara organized similar Yom Ha'Atzmaut celebrations.
