Ukraine Update: Bogdan's Story

photo: Bogdan Mayorov

Seven-year-old Bogdan Mayurov lives a challenging life with his parents Marina and Oleg in the southwestern Ukrainian port city of Odessa.

Since birth, Bogdan has had special needs, suffering from epileptic attacks, frequent colds, and a speech impediment. Marina doesn't work, instead spending her time caring for her son, and Oleg struggles to provide for his family on the salary he gets from the occasional odd job.

The family receives just $138 per month from the Ukrainian government as a disabilities allowance for Bogdan, and utilities alone eat up more than half of the additional funds Oleg brings in most months.

The Odessa Jewish Family Service, supported by JDC, ensures the family can provide necessary medications, speech therapy sessions, and a bed for Bogdan. JDC also provides Oleg and Marina with a food card to purchase groceries at the local supermarket, holiday meal sets, and the cash to complete critical household repairs.

Without JDC's help, the family would quite literally not have a roof over their heads; recently, Hesed helped fix the ceiling of the family's ground-floor kitchen, stopping persistent flooding from an apartment upstairs.

We help Bogdan and his family overcome their many challenges and ensure they know they are not alone.

For JDC, the Mayurovs are just one of the thousands of the most vulnerable Ukrainian Jewish families we are committed to assisting – during crises and during quiet times. But for Oleg, Marina, and little Bogdan, our support means the world.

Logging In With One of Your Social Web Site Logins

Instead of trying to remember a bunch of special username/password combinations to log in to different web sites that you visit, you can now link your account on this web site to your account on one (or more) of the social media web sites shown and log in with the same username/password combination that you use on that social web site to log in to our site.

To provide this connection in a secure manner, we use Gigya, a social network connection provider that works behind the scenes to make safe, secure connections between user accounts on different systems, such as popular social media web sites like Facebook and web sites like ours where you are actively involved in social issues and causes.

Each time you log in, Gigya uses special application programming interfaces (APIs) to establish the connection between the sites and validate your username and password. Neither our web site or Gigya receive or store your social network passwords.

In addition to reducing the number of logins you have to remember, connecting your accounts can make it quicker and easier to share an activity or cause you feel passionately about from our web site with your friends on your social web sites.

You can break the connection between your accounts at any time.
