JDC Began Work in the Region: 1940

While geographically enormous, the Asia region is the home of relatively few Jews, and the bulk of JDC’s program efforts are concentrated in India and Turkey. JDC’s challenge is to ensure that the region’s small, often widely dispersed Jewish populations can care for their neediest and are culturally vibrant and self-sustaining. To that end, JDC helps provide basic relief for the poor, the elderly, and children in need.

Primarily, though, JDC’s role in the region is as an agent of Jewish continuity through support of a Jewish school in Istanbul, a JCC in Mumbai, and other local Jewish institutions and through commitment to the development of both professional and lay leadership. JDC also works to establish bonds of identity and shared purpose among the various Jewish communities throughout the region and internationally. World events have raised security concerns for isolated Jews in the region, making JDC’s presence all the more critical today and for the foreseeable future.
