The Jerusalem Post: Guess who did not come to the party?

An op-ed by JDC CEO Steven Schwager Symbolism, rather than action, dominated the General Assembly (GA) of the Jewish Federations of North America. Yes, the GA was a magnificent celebration of Israeli-American Jewish unity and a demonstration of its might. But I returned from Washington more concerned than I have ever been in my 20 years of Jewish communal service. On one hand, we at JDC will support the newly-created JFNA. On the other hand, we are worried about those who were not "present at the party" during the GA. I refer to the other Jews - those who do not live in Israel or North America. Their voices were silent, their needs received a cursory notice and their communities were ignored. I am not trying to be a party spoiler, but 20 percent - one fifth! -of the Jewish people today live outside of the US and Israel.

A network of more than 170 JDC-supported Hesed welfare centers and other Jewish organizations offers vital services to ease the burden of elderly Jews living in the region’s bitter cold. Every day, homecare for the elderly, as well as thousands of blankets, boots, warm jackets, and gallons of heating fuel oil are being provided for the neediest clients.

New York Jewish Week: A Day Of Hope In Rwanda

From a hilltop in eastern Rwanda, an hour from Kigali, you can see Lake Mugesera and rolling countryside in every direction. Atop the hill, where 200 families tended small plots of corn and beans and bananas, young residents of the African country can see a bright future. The Jewish Voice and Herald: Our Jewish community contributes to a rousing Limud Keshet in Poland

Julian Swalter, now 17, found out he was Jewish when he was 10. Larysa vanBeek and Marcjanna Kubala were 13 before they found out they were Jewish. All three of these teens are Polish, and all three are involved in the growing Jewish community in Poland. We met them all last weekend at Limud Keshet in Warsaw, a weekend-long program of Jewish learning. JFRI’s Community Development Committee (CDC) made the decision last year to allocate funding to this program, operated by the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The support our Jewish community has offered to the Polish Jewish community through the JDC is having a significant impact.

JTA: Michael Steinhardt Joins Board of JDC-Taub Center

Michael Steinhardt has joined the board of the JDC-Taub Center for Social Policy. The center, founded in 1982 by American the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, provides the country's leading policy makers and general public with overarching socio-economic perspective, together with long-term strategic analyses and appraisals of policy options in the economic and social spheres, according to the JDC.

The Jerusalem Post: Despite new resources, many trafficking victims go unidentified

Despite new legislation aimed at tackling human trafficking and increased resources to help victims, many people brought to Israel for forced labor or the sex industry remain unknown, according Ilan Cohn, senior program officer for the Center for International Migration and Integration (CIMI). CIMI is a joint effort of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Justice Ministry with funding from the European Council and kicked off the first of five workshops Wednesday aimed at teaching officials from the Israel Police and the ministries of Justice, Interior, Health, Welfare and Social Services and Public Security to better recognize the victims and help them.

Jerusalem Post: NGOs Lead Israel’s Relief Efforts in the Philippines

Over the last four days, delegation of six Israeli volunteers has treated over 600 typhoon victims for water related diseases in the Philippines, according to IsraAID, the coalition of Jewish and Israeli NGOs providing relief work and education abroad. The workers members of the Fast Israeli Rescue Search Team (FIRST) arrived in the Philippines on Saturday morning. FIRST, which is part of IsraAID, has also received support from …The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
