Over the course of the past year, a group of volunteers affiliated with The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee’s (JDC) Next Gen initiative has been looking into launching a mobile giving campaign. When an earthquake devastated Haiti last month, suddenly the race was on to get it up and running immediately. JDC announced its text-to-donate campaign at “Help Haiti Now,” an emergency benefit held Jan. 19 at a popular music venue. The entire setup process took less than 48 hours after choosing a provider, says Sarah Eisenman, JDC’s director of next generation and service initiatives.
The daily images and news out of Haiti are inspiring central Ohioans to jump in and get involved -- even if that means going face first. Matthew Rodier, a seventh-grader at Columbus Torah Academy, was looking for a service project for his March bar mitzvah when the earthquake occurred. "I was in the car with my dad on the way to tae kwon do and we came up with the idea to have a demonstration to raise money," said Matthew, who earned his black belt in the martial art in October. Millions of lives -- and the future of a tiny nation -- are still in jeopardy. No, we're not talking about Israel, but Haiti -- that small, impoverished island nation. Within hours of a catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti last week, Israel and the United States led the way in rescue and recovery. JDC is providing food, water and other material support for EcoWorks and the Afya Foundation, aiding the work of Paul Farmer's Partners in Health. It is also supporting medical services through Heart to Heart International and the IDF field hospital, which JDC furnished with infant incubators and orthopedic devices.
