The New York Jewish Week: Opening Hearts, Wallets, for Haitians

At New York University and at a performance space in lower Manhattan, fundraising and consciousness-raising events were scheduled for this Tuesday evening, sponsored, respectively, by NYU’s Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee …the JDC fundraising event the same evening at SOBs, a performance space on Varick Street that usually features Haitian and other Caribbean music, was to include an update on the situation in Haiti, an open bar and music by a local Haitian band. SOBs donated its space and personnel for the night, and the Haitian musicians donated their time; proceeds from the event go to JDC’s emergency disaster-relief work in Haiti.

One week after the catastrophic earthquake and aftershocks struck Haiti, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the world’s largest Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, and its partners on the ground are ensuring that critical medical, nutritional and material relief are reaching victims everyday. JDC continues to coordinate its activities with the White House, the Department of State, USAID, the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Israeli relief agencies, the United Nations, and the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief.

Forward: After the Earth Moved

For American Jews who give generously to charity, there is often an inner struggle: How much should they support other Jews, and how much should they give to causes in the wider world? The two main Jewish organizations already in Haiti before it was devastated by the January 12 earthquake — and which no doubt will be there after the cameras and celebrities have left — illustrate both approaches. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has for nearly a century responded to crises within the Jewish world. But when Hurricane Gustav slammed into the island in 2008, the JDC extended its help, developing relationships with organizations on the ground in Haiti that proved immediately useful in responding to this epic disaster.

The Baltimore Sun: Religious Groups Concentrate on Relief Efforts to Aid Haitians

In the wake of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that has leveled Port-au-Prince, religious groups - many of which have long sent money and volunteers to Haitian orphanages, schools, clinics and churches - are focusing their charitable attention on disaster relief in the Caribbean nation of 9 million. They are talking about the devastation at services, taking up special collections and organizing teams to join the huge international relief effort ... including the emergency relief fund of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.

JTA: Jewish Groups Mobilize in Wake of Devastating Haiti Quake

As the death toll mounts in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the organized Jewish world is lining up support for the rescue and relief effort in the region. IsraAID and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee are funneling Jewish communal support into Haiti “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti in the wake of this overwhelming disaster, and as we did following Hurricane Gustav in 2008, JDC will leverage its strong partnerships in the region to respond quickly and compassionately to the needs of those affected,” said Steven Schwager, JDC’s chief executive officer.

JDC appeared on relief listings of CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, WCBS, and other affiliate stations around the U.S. Numerous organizations are mobilizing to lend a hand in the devastating aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti. Included is the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee: the world’s largest Jewish humanitarian assistance organization is collecting funds for relief efforts and working with partners on the ground in Haiti.

The Jerusalem Post: Guess who did not come to the party?

An op-ed by JDC CEO Steven Schwager Symbolism, rather than action, dominated the General Assembly (GA) of the Jewish Federations of North America. Yes, the GA was a magnificent celebration of Israeli-American Jewish unity and a demonstration of its might. But I returned from Washington more concerned than I have ever been in my 20 years of Jewish communal service. On one hand, we at JDC will support the newly-created JFNA. On the other hand, we are worried about those who were not "present at the party" during the GA. I refer to the other Jews - those who do not live in Israel or North America. Their voices were silent, their needs received a cursory notice and their communities were ignored. I am not trying to be a party spoiler, but 20 percent - one fifth! -of the Jewish people today live outside of the US and Israel.

A network of more than 170 JDC-supported Hesed welfare centers and other Jewish organizations offers vital services to ease the burden of elderly Jews living in the region’s bitter cold. Every day, homecare for the elderly, as well as thousands of blankets, boots, warm jackets, and gallons of heating fuel oil are being provided for the neediest clients.

New York Jewish Week: A Day Of Hope In Rwanda

From a hilltop in eastern Rwanda, an hour from Kigali, you can see Lake Mugesera and rolling countryside in every direction. Atop the hill, where 200 families tended small plots of corn and beans and bananas, young residents of the African country can see a bright future. The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village was dedicated there recently, a nonsectarian project of the American Jewish Joint Distribution
