Rescuing the Poorest Jews in the Former Soviet Union
Twelve family members cram into this squalid one-room apartment in Shimkent. Their only support for daily survival comes from JDC's welfare programs and the IFCJ-JDC Partnership for Children in the former Soviet Union.

Nikita is kept happy and healthy by the JDC-supported Jewish Family Outreach Service, a program providing material and social support to approximately 3,700 Jewish children in Belarus.
During the 2008 Georgia-Russia conflict, JDC evacuated and cared for distressed Georgian Jews, many of whom are clients of JDC's Hesed welfare programs.
Programs for families and children such as the Beitenu "Mitzvah School" in Kiev create a Jewish environment in which young community members socialize and learn about religious holidays and traditions.

JDC-IDP's Vocational Training program in Georgia is helping local war refugees procure gainful employment by offering specialized courses in high-demand areas such as clothing design and hotel management.
At summer family retreats in Azerbaijan, supported by the IFCJ-JDC Partnership, Jewish children have the opportunity to enjoy activities like sports and arts and crafts in a fun and educational Jewish environment.
JDC's efforts to ensure a Jewish future in the FSU are often in the form of educational programs, Shabbat and holiday celebrations,and social and cultural activities such as in the YESOD in St. Petersburg, Jews of all ages prepare for Passover by baking Matzah and learning about the holiday.
