“Destination Shanghai” Gathers Asian Jewish Leaders for Learning and Innovation

Nearly two hundred Jews from Asia and around the world will arrive here on April 4 for Destination Shanghai, a four-day gathering of Jewish learning, creativity, and history in Asia. With sixty educational and cultural workshops, a Shanghai Shabbat experience, and a day dedicated to Shanghai’s WWII Jewish history and global Jewish responsibility, the event is a project of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Limmud China, and avolunteer network of Asian Jewish community leaders. Forty regional young Jewish leaders will attend through a partnership with the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Philanthropic Network. JDC Entwine (JDC’s young adult movement) is bringing a global cohort of young adult activists as well. Participants come from China, India, Japan, Singapore, Israel, the UK, and the U.S.

JDC Receives Grant to Further Expand West Coast Global Jewish Education, Service Opportunities

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) – through its Entwine initiative for young Jewish leaders – will further expand its educational and global service opportunities for West Coast Jews in their 20’s and 30’s thanks to grants from the Jim Joseph and Leichtag Foundations. As the region is home to a growing and influential population of young Jews, these combined grants aim to increase the reach of JDC Entwine Global Learning Networks in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. Part of the funding will also expand the number of California-based young adults participating in JDC global service programs. Additionally, San Diego will become a hub and center for JDC Entwine programming in California.

JDC Announces First Archives Fellows

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) announced today that historians Mary Fraser Kirsh and Susan Gilson Miller were named the first Fred and Ellen Lewis JDC Archives Fellows. Designed for scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study, the Fellowship is for research in the JDC Archives facilities in New York or Jerusalem.

JDC/PRESENTENSE Names First Moscow Fellows

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and PresenTense have announced 13 young Jewish entrepreneurs as its first group of Moscow-based Kaet Fellows. From a high tech expert to a small town rabbi, these Russian social innovators will enter a 5-month incubator where they will transform their ideas for addressing community challenges into sustainable local ventures. Such ventures will include those focusing on Jewish education, emergency medical training, the needs of Jewish seniors, volunteerism, Jewish art and culture, among other topic areas.

JSC is a year-long, paid, professional opportunity for recent college graduates and young professionals to directly engage with JDC’s global mission and actively fulfill the value of Jewish responsibility. JDC Announces 2010 Ralph I. Goldman (RIG) Fellows

The Ralph I. Goldman Fellowship (RIG), established in 1987, is named after JDC’s honorary Executive Vice-President, who served as the organization’s top professional leader and who proved to be instrumental in the establishment of the State of Israel. Fellows participate in JDC’s global programs through a range of unique assignments that respond to the changing needs of Jewish communities around the world.

Nobel Laureates Join Taub Center’s International Advisory Council

Nobel Laureates Gary S. Becker, Aaron Ciechanover, James J. Heckman and Daniel Kahneman have joined the International Advisory Council of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel, one of Israel’s most prestigious think-tanks. Providing the country’s leading policy makers and general public with highly regarded socio-economic perspectives and policy options, the Taub Center was established in 1982 by American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).

JDC, BBYO Launch Overseas Service Fellowship

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and BBYO launched a new overseas service fellowship for BBYO alumni, the JDC-BBYO Global Service Fellowship. This new initiative will place four BBYO alumni in JDC’s Jewish Service Corps for one year to work with overseas Jewish communities on their most pressing welfare, Jewish renewal and humanitarian needs and develop teen programming and connections to Jewish life through BBYO’s innovative leadership programming and international network. The JDC-BBYO Global Service Fellowship is receiving initial support from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation.

At JDC Szarvas Camp in Hungary, Indians Complete Global Gathering for Young Jews

When Adir Bhastekar told his parents he had been offered the opportunity to leave the bustling, crowded streets of Mumbai this summer to travel to far-off Szarvas, Hungary, they told him to jump at the chance. They wanted him to join the more than 1,300 young Jews from around the world who were experiencing a unique kind of Jewish community at the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation/American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) International Summer Camp in the serene forests of Southeastern Hungary.

JDC Dedicates Memorial Commemorating Heroic Fallen Staff

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) dedicated an interactive memorial wall commemorating more than forty JDC employees, from 1920 until today, who fell in the course of their missions assisting and rescuing Jews around the globe. The memorial was presented and conceived by JDC’s CEO Steven Schwager.
