Zhanna is one of the tens of thousands of elderly Jews throughout the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe whose life and dignity depend on the critical assistance provided by the Jewish community. JDC supplements Zhanna’s meager $80 monthly pension with a food debit card to purchase groceries at the supermarket. But it is the human companionship accompanying this assistance that truly lights up her life.
