JDC Activities to Aid Victims of the Volcano in Congo
January, 2002
The Mt. Nyiragongo volcano, located 10 miles north of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, began erupting on January 17, causing massive damage and destruction. Up to 400,000 of the city's 500,000 are reported to have been displaced. Although hundreds of thousands initially crossed the border into neighboring Rwanda for assistance, the majority are now attempting to return home.
