JDC Announces Appointment of Darrell D. Friedman

New York, January 14, 2003 - The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) announced today that Darrell D. Friedman will assume the position of a Special Consultant to the JDC effective August 2003. Mr. Friedman comes to JDC from THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, after serving 16 years as its president.

Steven Schwager, executive vice president of the JDC, stated "Darrell has proven himself to be one of the top federation executives in all of North America over the past 16 years. He will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enhance the work and success of our organization. We look forward to having Darrell on our team at JDC."

When asked for a response, Mr. Friedman shared "I am excited to join JDC and believe that this new position is a logical and natural step in my more than 30-year-long career in Jewish communal work. Leading THE ASSOCIATED has been a privilege and honor, and while I will miss my close friends, volunteer leaders and professional colleagues in Baltimore with whom I worked so closely, I know they will support me in this opportunity to continue to serve the Jewish people in a meaningful way."

Mr. Friedman's responsibilities as Special Consultant will include management of various foundation relationships; professional staff training and mentoring; and taking on a range of strategic initiatives. Mr. Friedman and his family will relocate to New York City so that he may assume this new position.

Darrell Friedman joined THE ASSOCIATED in 1986, after a seven-year tenure as senior associate executive vice-president for the Council of Jewish Federations in New York. A native of San Francisco, he studied at the University of California at Berkeley, earning a B.A. in 1964 and a master's degree in social work three years later.
