JDC Opens Mailbox for Indonesia Earthquake Relief
Quake death-toll rises to 5,400; More than 200,000 left homelessNew York---The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) today announced that it has opened a mailbox to collect donations to aid victims of the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near Yogyakarta Indonesia on Saturday, May 27.
The earthquake has now caused more than 5,000 fatalities in the farming region south of Yogyakarta and has left more than 200,000 people homeless. JDC has already provided 10 tons of rice, 10,000 water containers and 3,000 crates of protein-enriched biscuits.
"Because of partnerships we formed following 2004 tsunami, we have been able to mobilize quickly and immediately get a shipment of necessary relief supplies to the disaster area," said Steve Schwager, executive vice president, JDC. "In the coming days and weeks we will continue to evaluate needs and address them with the compassion and professionalism that have come to define us in the region."
