JDC, already implementing social welfare programs in Turkey prior to the first earthquake this summer was on the scene immediately and provided goods and services to the Israeli Village -- a comprehensive care site in Turkey, set up by the Israeli government to provide basic relief for earthquake victims. JDC continues to provide equipment for the Israeli Village's medical clinic, and is funding and equipping the Israeli Village school.
JDC has
also supported the pediatric unit of the field hospital set up by the Israeli
Army, flying several children with extreme medical cases to Israel for treatment.
When the first earthquake hit Turkey in August of 1999, Diana Barnett, a New York photographer specializing in children, felt the need to act. "I wanted to hear the voices of the children in Turkey. It came to me that I had an opportunity to take a camera and be their voice.." Diana flew to Turkey to document how the children are coping. Here are a few glimpses -- a snapshot -- of what she saw.
