JDC Raises More Than $1 Million Through Non-Sectarian South Asia Tsunami Relief Appeal

How your donation is being spent - JDC Q&A

New York, NY; December 30, 2004---The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is reporting today that it has collected more than $1 million in individual contributions to the organization’s non-sectarian South Asia Tsunami Relief mailbox.

In the 48 hours since the mailbox was announced, the 90-year-old organization has received online or phone contributions from more than 6,000 individuals. The dollar and individual donor totals do not include mail-in donations, which JDC is in the process of counting. In previous JDC emergency appeals, mail-ins have accounted for the bulk of the money raised.

JDC will allocate the funds it raises through this effort to partner organizations on the ground in South Asia. It will soon begin to support agencies that are best equipped to address critical areas of need that have not been adequately met.

"This is a disaster of historic proportions," said Steven Schwager, JDC’s executive vice president. "We are heartened by the spirit people have shown us in their desire to help people on the other side of the world. JDC is going to make certain that the money we raise will have a true impact in easing the unimaginable suffering in South Asia."

Contributions can be made by credit card via JDC's website: https://www.jdc.org/donation/jdc_form.cfm,

via phone: 212-687-6200, or by check payable to:
