AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE SENDING SEVEN VOLUNTEERS ON ONE-YEAR ASSIGNMENTS AROUND GLOBE

Jewish Service Corps (JSC) Assigns Energetic Young Leaders To Projects In Turkey, Poland, Romania, India, Ethiopia and Austria

New York, NY----The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) today announced that it has assigned seven volunteers to overseas projects as part of its Jewish Service Corps (JSC) for 2005-06. The volunteers have completed a two-day orientation at JDC headquarters in New York and will soon begin their assignments.

The JSC is a unique, one-year volunteer opportunity for active, enthusiastic, knowledgeable Jews to serve, and take part in the life of, a Jewish community abroad. With every assignment, JDC matches the unique skills of the volunteer with specific, timely Jewish community needs in the country of service. Once abroad, JSC volunteers create innovative programs and recruit and train local leaders to continue the work after the volunteer departs.

For most of this group the challenge will be to promote Jewish identity and help communities become more self-sufficient in their Jewish programming activities. Each of the seven volunteers was active in Jewish life on his or her university campus, has lived abroad and has experience tutoring and mentoring.
