Hospice Center for the Elderly (2007-present)
A state institution, the Hospital of Palliative Care - the Hospice - provides emotional, spiritual, and medical care for terminally ill elderly, as well as providing practical and psychological support for their family members. A free standing unit, it is the first Hospice for the adult terminally ill in Belarus. The Hospice is in dire need of new medical equipment that can alleviate the suffering of those with a life limiting illness. JDC is funding the purchase of two oxygen concentrators, manufactured locally, that will belong to the hospice and enhance the quality of end-of-life for hospice patients. These devices, on wheels, create 90% oxygen from the air in the room. The equipment will belong to the Hospice. A hand-over ceremony will follow, to be attended by Belarusian governmental dignitaries, and leaders of the Belarus Jewish Community.
This project provides a higher level of palliative care to the most seriously ill elderly in Minsk city; raises awareness and understanding of hospice care and support among Hesed personnel; and integrates end-of-life care into the health care continuum provided at Hesed Rachamim. It is also developing a partnership between the Jewish community and local State institutions that will strengthen the local community.
