Non-Sectarian Programs

View Brochure: 90 Years of Strengthening the World

One of Judaism’s basic tenets, tikkun olam, tells us that we cannot be bystanders in a world where pain and suffering abound. It challenges us to embrace communities everywhere; especially those touched by catastrophe, poverty and injustice. Since inception, JDC has offered aid to non-Jews in crisis overseas. These non-sectarian efforts were formalized in 1986 with the establishment of JDC’s International Development Program (JDC-IDP), which embodies the spirit of tikkun olam.

We offer humanitarian aid to non-Jewish communities that suffer from man-made and natural disasters, such as earthquakes, famine or war. Working in partnership with international aid agencies, local governmental and non-governmental organizations and local Jewish communities, JDC-IDP provides immediate assistance to address victims’ emergency needs and then conducts longer-term rehabilitation efforts.

JDC-IDP also provides longer-term development assistance that aids some of the world's most vulnerable citizens. Training is an essential part of all of these efforts and is intended to enhance the self-reliance of local partners and ensure that projects continue after JDC’s involvement has ended.

In the long-standing tradition of Jewish humanitarianism, our non-sectarian program gives the American Jewish public, and others, a way to respond to disasters overseas and participate in international development efforts.

JDC's Non-Sectarian Programs are funded by mailboxes and special donations. UJC/Federation annual campaign funds are not used for JDC Non-Sectarian activities.
