Mumbai Jews Prepare for PesachWith the holiday fast approaching, the Evelyn Peters Jewish Community Center and the JDC office have been a hub of activity around the education and celebration of Passover. In Gan Katan, the JCC's informal children's education class, Indian Jewish students created multi-media model seder plates and decorated their own Haggadah - from the order of the seder to the four questions and the ten plagues. At the Rosh Chodesh Open House for the eldery and cash-assistees, participants studied the laws of Passover, reviewed the Haggadah and decorated special Matzah covers which they took home to use for their own upcoming seders or at one of the community seders JDC sponsors in the Mumbai area. During the holiday itself, JDC staff and volunteers also will fan out to assist smaller communities in leading their seders. From the northern city of Ahmedebad in the state of Gujarat to the rural villages on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, the JDC-sponsored seders, in partnership with local synagogues and community organizations, will be conducted in at least 5 different languages and attended by over 350 members of the Indian Jewish community.
