Yom Hashoah Ceremony in Mumbai, India

Members of India’s small but vibrant Jewish community gathered this week on Yom HaShoah to light candles, hear poetry and say prayers to remember the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The ceremony, hosted by JDC and the Israeli Consulate General, took place at the Evelyn Peters Jewish Community Center in Mumbai.

More than 140 people, including diplomatic representatives from Israel, the United States, Poland, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Romania and the Netherlands, heard 15 Indian Jewish youth relate the experiences of individual Jews who died or survived the Nazi excesses. Participants also viewed "Hope and Beyond", a photo exhibition showcasing the work of JDC in the years during and following the Holocaust. After the ceremony, there was a screening of The Devil’s Arithmetic, a contemporary film about the Holocaust.

Jonathan, one of the community leaders who participated in the ceremony, was deeply moved by the event and the mood among the participants.

"For so long, Indian Jews — who have never known persecution — felt disconnected from the rest of the Jewish world," Jonathan said. "At this ceremony, though, we joined Jews around the world and shared their agony."
