Gan Limudim: Judaic Education for India's Jewish Youth
Gan Limudim, a Jewish education initiative by JDC in India is successfully attracting Indian Jewish children who are interested in learning about Jewish traditions. Ten children—ages 3 to 12—participated in the first official class on August 24th, 2003 held at the JDC offices in India. Led by two teachers, and Julieta, a JSC volunteer from Argentina, students were educated on the topic of the day: Creation. The lesson plan emphasized the creation of the world and the importance of Shabbat. The older children were also given an introduction to the Hebrew alphabet.
During the day, all of the Gan Limudim participants learned two Jewish songs, a Jewish dance, and yoga. They were also instructed on the recitation of appropriate b'rachot (blessings) over the washing of the hands and preparing of snacks. Due to the enthusiasm of the participants, the second class was scheduled in September. The next course will be offered after the High Holidays. |
