New Viola Ensures Love of Jewish Life in Cuba

For thirteen-year-old Alberto, playing the viola has always been an important part of his life. So he was devastated when he had to return his borrowed instrument, knowing his family could never afford another one. But then a Cleveland Jewish Federation mission coming to Cuba heard his story and arrived with a new viola in tow. As it was presented, Alberto broke into a rendition of Hatikvah, moving everyone to tears.

Alberto - together with his sister, Diana, on the piano - has not stopped playing at the Jewish community ever since. Most recently, the siblings performed at a special collective Jewish wedding ceremony for couples who had never had the opportunity to marry under a chuppah. Among the brides and grooms were their own parents.

About to complete Cuba's first bar and bat mitzvah course, Alberto and Diana look forward to sharing their personal milestone with the community that fostered their love of Jewish life. "As long as we have something to celebrate," say their proud parents, "Jews will always be here in Cuba."
