Prior to JDC's return to Estonia in 1988, the country's small Jewish population was isolated from the rest of the Jewish world. JDC immediately launched programs of welfare relief for Estonia's elderly Jews and began helping the community rebuild a Jewish communal infrastructure. We also initiated regional exchanges and activities among the Jewish communities in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. These programs have contributed much to Jewish renewal in Estonia. A regional Internet network now connects the Estonian Jews with Jews from Lithuania and Latvia. Regional seminars, training programs for youth counselors, and events for the region's young adults enable Jews from Estonia to meet their peers from the other Baltic nations. Delegates from Estonia participate in the Baltic Knesset, an annual General Assembly of the Baltic communities. With JDC's support, the Jewish community of Estonia is reclaiming its heritage. 2005 |
