JDC established ties with Bulgarian Jewry over 75 years
ago. In the 1940s, JDC launched a major relief effort to help rehabilitate
the Bulgarian Jewish community as World War II was drawing to a close. JDC
returned to Bulgaria in 1990 and opened an office in Sofia in 1992. Today, JDC
works in partnership with SHALOM– Bulgarian Jewry’s social and cultural
organization – to meet the needs of Bulgaria’s Jewish community.
The hard-line Communist regime that ruled Bulgaria between 1944 and 1989 ensured that Bulgarian Jewry would remain isolated from world Jewry. A small group of Bulgarian Jews administered the synagogue in Sofia, while a second, secular, group acted as a Communist mouthpiece. For most of the Jewish population, Jewish life under Communism was virtually non-existent. Today, with SHALOM as its partner, JDC is helping this small but spirited Jewish community to assist its needy elderly, reclaim its Sephardic Jewish heritage, and rebuild Jewish communal life. We invite you to explore the ways in which JDC is helping the Jewish community of Bulgaria to revive Jewish life. 2005 |
