Aaron's Story

"I always had the travel bug," said Aaron, a JDC Jewish Service Corps volunteer.  "When I heard of this opportunity to travel and share something that I really knew and cared about, I jumped at it."

Aaron, a 25-year-old college graduate, soon found himself in Sofia, Bulgaria, working with community leaders to develop educational programs that would energize Jewish life and culture in a country poised for a Jewish revival. "My Bulgarian was good enough to teach seven- or eight-year-olds because I spoke like a seven- or eight-year-old," he laughingly recalls.

Outside the classroom, Aaron devoted his time to training young community members.  "My job was to help them take over responsibilities previously held by earlier JSC volunteers," said Aaron.  One way he accomplished his goal was by introducing innovative educational programs.

Upon his return, he reflected, "America is different to me now.  My perspective has changed, as have my priorities.  There was a month in Sofia when we didn’t have any flour, and people weren’t sure if there would be bread on their table the next day.  Nothing is just face value to me anymore."
