After the Holocaust, the names of nearly 70,000 murdered Jews were painted
on the walls of the sanctuary of the 500-year-old Pinkas synagogue. During
Communist rule, whole sections were erased – but with the fall of Communism,
these names were restored. Like the walls of this sanctuary, Jewish life
in the Czech Republic has been restored over the last two decades.
JDC returned to the Czech Republic when it was still part of Czechoslovakia, almost a decade before the Velvet Revolution and the fall of Communism. At that time, JDC helped meet the welfare needs of Czechoslovakia’s Jewish elderly, and we provided religious articles to help sow the first seeds of Jewish renewal. Today, thanks to financial gains resulting from communal property restitution, the Czech Jewish Community is largely self-sufficient and able to respond to the changing needs of Czech Jewry. However, JDC continues to provide technical assistance to the Jewish Community in the planning of welfare programs for the elderly and the training of local social welfare professionals. We invite you to discover more about JDC’s role in the Czech Republic. 2005 |
