- Germany

Germany’s Jewish population experienced a major growth in the last ten years and currently comprises more than 200,000 members, many of them émigrés from the former Soviet Union (FSU). These new arrivals are entitled to welfare services from the German government contingent upon their settling outside Germany’s main cities. Although the support is providing financial stability for these needy immigrants it resulted in the decentralization of the community, presenting challenges to building the infrastructure for Jewish communal life. Additionally, many Russian immigrants strive to maintain their native cultural identity and are emotionally distanced from Jewish life which further complicates their successful integration into the greater Jewish community.

In cooperation with its local partners, JDC is achieving real progress in effectively addressing community needs while continuing to engage and empower these new citizens of Germany.
