When JDC returned to Poland in 1982, Polish Jewry consisted of roughly 6,000
Jews, most of whom were aging Holocaust survivors. Since that time, thousands
of additional Polish Jews – young and old – have come forward to participate
in the renewal of Polish Jewish life.
JDC’s original purpose in Poland was to provide assistance to elderly Holocaust survivors, who were suffering from poverty, loneliness, and neglect. Over time, as the Polish Jewish community has expanded and changed, JDC has broadened its scope. Today, while we continue to work with Polish Jewish organizations to provide crucial care for the elderly, we also support programs that are enabling the younger generations to rediscover their Jewish heritage and rebuild Jewish communal life. JDC’s partner organizations in Poland include the Jewish Religious Community of Poland (JRCP), the Jewish Social/ Cultural Association of Poland (TSKZ), the Polish Union of Jewish Students (PUSZ), the Association of Holocaust Children, the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI), the Jewish Combatants Organization, and others.
