- Romania

For thirty-five years, JDC has worked in partnership with the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania (FEDROM) – the national infrastructure representing Romanian Jewry – to meet the needs of Romanian Jews.

JDC returned to Romania in 1967, initiating a full-scale relief operation to provide food packages, clothing, and medical attention to Romania’s mostly elderly and impoverished Jews. Over the following decades, JDC helped FEDROM establish and support socio-medical centers, subsidized kosher canteens, and old age homes. Today, JDC continues to work with FEDROM to ensure that Romania’s Jewish elderly – double victims of both the Holocaust and an oppressive Communist regime – can live out their lives in dignity.

JDC is also helping FEDROM prepare for the future by working to revitalize Jewish education in Romania, reaching out to unaffiliated Jews, and cultivating young leadership. We invite you to discover more about JDC’s efforts to promote a dynamic resurgence of Jewish culture in Romania.
