Transylvania's Jewish History and Remaining RootsIn June 2003 JDC Board member Alan Rothenberg traveled with a group from the San Francisco Jewish Federation to Transylvania in search for Jewish roots. His goals were to observe remains of places that were settled by Jewish people, experience Jewish life in the Romania of today, and to visit elderly recipients receiving assistance. Along his travels he was told that 75 percent of the Jews living in Romania are elderly, and that JDC helps deliver monthly food packages and medicines to them. During the trip they visited the small town of Carei, once flourishing with many Jewish families but now only has 3 Jewish residents, ages 78, 79, and 80. To read the full story, please click here.
