With the establishment of the independent state of Moldova in August 1991,
Moldova’s Jews were determined to restore the Jewish life that had flourished
there prior to World War II. However, they lacked the organizational and communal
skills needed to give that life full expression. They also were severely hampered
by the subsequent collapse of Moldova’s economy.
JDC’s goals have been to ease the suffering of the Jewish elderly in Moldova and to help the community build a solid communal infrastructure so that Jewish life can flourish anew. The Jews of Moldova have made tremendous strides. Welfare programs for the elderly are now operating in eight cities and towns. Jewish Community Centers have been established in six cities. The Moldovan Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities functions as the country’s Jewish umbrella body. Working closely with JDC, the association supports local Jewish community organizations in each city. Its work is complemented by the Communities and by the Association of the Jewish Organizations of Beltsy. Yet, despite these achievements, economic hardships still threaten this valiant community. As long as Moldava’s Jews need our support, JDC will be there to help. 2005 |
