A Pharmacist Who Cannot Afford MedicineAs a pharmacist in Moldova, Irina spent the better part of a lifetime helping others get well. But for most of her 93 years, she didn't need much help herself. "I've been very lucky," she notes. "Believe me, I know: not many people have so many years of good health." In the end, though, even Irina's health declined. When diabetes set in, she managed, thanks to JDC food packages, to stretch her $12-a-month pension to buy the pills she needed. But the diabetes worsened, requiring insulin injections. Then she developed a heart condition. She understood the doctor's instructions. But the medications were far beyond her means. "I don't know if I'd be alive today without Hesed," she says, referring to the free prescription drugs JDC's Hesed medical relief program provides her. "I just couldn't afford to buy what I need." Now mostly homebound after a fall, Hesed homecare workers and volunteers helped her learn how to use a walker, and visit regularly to bring her food and medicine, and simply keep an eye on her. "I really am very lucky," reflects Irina. "I'm 93, and I have people who care for me." |
