Shabbat on the Roof
For the first time in the history of Hesed Avraham, the Jewish community of St. Petersburg celebrated Kabbalat Shabbat on the roof of the JDC-sponsored social welfare center. Intrigued by the unique nature of the event, 150 guests participated in the "Shabbat on the Roof" festivities. Singing and dance groups engaged the crowd, who blended into the decadent oriental décor of tents, low benches, and ornate mattresses. "Shabbat on the Roof" offered unique advantages, among them fresh air and a breathtaking panorama of the Neva River and Vyborgsky District where the Hesed is located. These natural elements enhance the spirituality of the celebration according to Boris, the program leader. "On the roof we become closer to G-d," he said. Guests reveled in the sounds of Jewish melodies played by the band "Avocado Style," singing along and clapping their hands. In anticipation of Shabbat, the community then settled down in their places for a vibrant discussion of the weekly Torah portion. The evening boasted other cultural activities, including an appearance by a local dance troupe. Guests, comfortably sprawled out on the mattresses, felt entranced by the beautiful atmosphere. For some participants, this was their first Shabbat experience. As the sun began to set, the women were invited to light candles to usher in the Sabbath. Blessings were recited over the wine and challah. And despite signs of impending rain, the community enjoyed a Shabbat seuda – a festive meal of chicken kebabs, sandwiches, beer, and wine. Guests and participating artists then joined in renditions of traditional Shabbat songs, helping to familiarize newcomers with the words and melodies. As the night drew to a close, participants began to depart in strikingly high spirits. Many people, for whom "Shabbat on the Roof" was their first Hesed experience, were so impressed that they expressed interest in returning for other similar events.
"This activity included community members from all ages and city boundaries, which infused the evening with an overwhelming sense of community," observed one guest. "I never though that the ambience would be so cheerful here," said Mikhail, a new visitor to Hesed. "On our way here, we thought that the evening would be passive, where we were to simply sit and listen. It was nothing of the sort, though," he continued. "Artists and leaders communicated with the spectators and vice versa. I enjoyed everything and will surely attend the next Jazz events on Thursday nights at Hesed —a place to dance and rest." "Shabbat on the Roof" is one of many innovative programs contributing to the revival of the Jewish community in St. Petersburg. Even while Shabbat is generally spent among family, holding community celebrations on a grand level offers those who may not be aware of Jewish traditions the possibility of learning and celebrating – in the words of Boris – "closer to G-d". |
