Elderly Woman Finds a Reprieve from Loneliness at Hesed

Luba, born in 1934, was a young girl when war hit. "I know that my father was killed on the front in the Bryansk forest, but I still do not know anything about my mother," she says.

She spent her early years at a children's home in Negine, Ukraine, and then completed her studies as a young adult.

Luba came to Tashkent in 1968, and two years later entered Tashkent Aircraft Plant as a cadmium worker. She was rewarded with a number of honors, including a Medal for Labour and many diplomas.

Despite being recognized for her exceptional work, Luba lived most of her adult life in trying conditions. She was absolutely alone – without family or friends – and, particularly in more recent years, could not afford even essential medicines.

Thanks to the Hesed in Tashkent, a JDC-sponsored social welfare center, Luba says that her life has changed "cardinally". "I am pleased that I come to this big Jewish family. I like to visit the programs of Hesed; my favorite program is The Club," says Luba. "There are many events and concerts; poetry, music and other absorbing things."

Hesed provides Luba with food and medications, as well as consultations with doctors from the Medical Program. "I found my new family, friends, and much kindness here. Thanks a lot for everything you do!"
