ISRAEL: Taub Index of Social Confidence for Third Quarter 2005

The Social Economic UPDATE for 3Q 2005 offers a comprehensive perspective on social trends and policy in Israel that goes beyond the headlines. It presents an unbiased, non-partisan evaluation of policy and its impact. This quarter's issue focuses on: economic and social events in the areas of the economy, health, education, welfare, and related fields.

In this edition, we have added a new item that describes the findings of an index developed at the Taub Center. It offers a concise measure of social confidence – the sense of individual socio-economic security. Briefly, the index indicates that this sense of security has been improving over the past two years. At the same time, though, the feeling of the existence of social economic gaps has been growing. What we have found is that the social confidence of those with below average income is much less than that of the more well to do – a social confidence gap that has increased and is reflected in the 2005 Taub Index of Social Confidence.
