IDF “Navy Seal” Guides At-Risk Children Toward Success
No stranger to challenges, Shlomi, a six year veteran of Shayetet, the IDF equivalent to the Navy Seals, has his sights on a new goal – changing the course of lives. Shlomi was raised in Or Akiva, an area near Haifa, where 70% of the population is new immigrants. While Shlomi was attending school in a different town, his friends from Or Akiva were dropping out. When he enlisted and was accepted into Shayetet, his peers from the neighborhood avoided service or took non-combat positions. Shlomi was succeeding in life but his childhood friends were not.
Children in Or Akiva live in two separate worlds -- that of their parents with their traditional values and expectations – and modern-day Israel with its norms and rules. Shlomi knows that an essential part of succeeding in Israeli society is completing combat IDF service, something most youth in Or Akiva do not do. With the help of JDC, Shlomi began Nirim Shchunot – Nirim Neighborhood -- to help guide and mentor these young people toward successful IDF service. Shlomi's partner in this endeavor is Pniel, the father of his fallen brother-in-arms and project name-sake, Nirim. This emotional tie furthers Shlomi's fierce dedication to making it and the students who go through Nirim Shchunot a success. Listen as Shlomi discusses Nirim Shchunot.
