"Community Fathers" Help People with Disabilities Under Fire
In spite of the fact that they are subject to missile attacks, people with disabilities remain in their homes. In response, JDC's Unit for Disabilities and Rehabilitation has tailored the role of 'Community-Father', a successful element of the Supportive Communities for Independent Living Program, to assist these clients with emergency repairs in the home. A special tool kit has been provided. Also, the Community Father helps distribute meals, hand out medicine, and substitute for personal aids that have not shown up for work for days. Moreover, they conduct telephone conversations with members of the community suffering from stress, in an effort to diminish their anxiety. An immediate response is offered to those in need 24 hours a day. This emergency project is initiated by JDC-Israel, together with the Community Center Organization and the Ministry of Welfare, through the aid of the United Jewish Communities of North America.
