Stretching on a Sunday Morning: Israel's Elderly Practice Chinese Martial Arts

Every Sunday morning 40 dedicated elderly gather in a park in Jerusalem to practice Chi Kong. The early morning workout is a way of life for a growing number of Israel's elderly who participate in JDC-ESHEL's health promotion programs. JDC-ESHEL is a partnership between JDC and the government of Israel.

Chi, meaning energy, and Kong, meaning art, is a form of martial art, part of the Tai Chi family that is frequently practiced in China and the east. Using simple stretching and breathing techniques, Chi Kong and Tai Chi's slow exercises improve balance, and are thus immensely beneficial to an elderly population who, as they age, increasingly suffer from fall-related injuries. "When I am uptight and tense, it frees my body of tension," said one 74-year old participant.

Increasing in popularity at an amazing rate, Chi Kong is one of the favorites of the new outdoor public exercise phenomenon in Israel. And with no need for words, this exercise program appeals to new immigrant and veteran Israeli alike. It is also an important part of JDC-ESHEL's efforts to improve the quality of life among an Israeli population that is living longer. JDC-ESHEL is encouraging expansion of outdoor exercise programs to additional communities throughout Israel, in partnership with local community centers, associations for the elderly and municipalities.

"This is better and easier than 'real' exercise," explained another regular, who participates in three different groups around Jerusalem. "I even do it at home to feel better."

Recently, a UJC Young Leadership Mission to Israel stopped at the park to exercise with the elderly participants. "It's not unlike what we see in Pittsburgh's public parks," observed one mission participant, who enjoyed the unique opportunity to bridge cultures and generations.
