AMEN Training Helps Kitra "Do Something Important With Her Life"
JDC's programs in Israel seek to provide the country's most vulnerable citizens with the skills and knowledge that they need to build successful and independent lives. For Kitra, a chronically unemployed young woman, participation in a JDC program not only gave her these proficiencies but it also revolutionized her whole persona and approach to life.
Kitra, 27 from Netanya, is one of 15 recent graduates of a year-long computer training course with Cisco Systems in Israel. As she was recruited for the program through JDC's AMEN program for young volunteers – an initiative which seeks to cultivate a culture of volunteerism among Israeli youth and young adults – she did not have to pay tuition. Instead, she earned her place by volunteering within her community – one of 13 municipalities in which AMEN is currently operating.
In a letter of thanks written to JDC, Kitra describes the profound positive effect that this experience has had on her life:
Dear JDC,
Participating in the AMEN/Cisco training course completely changed my life and I want to share with you how... When I started the course I was very introverted and didn’t know anything about computers. As a child, we never had a computer at home…so I always felt intimidated by the world of computers. Even though I was always interested in knowing more, when I started I felt very unsure about my abilities to succeed.
Since the course, I have changed dramatically. Prior to the course, I was not very open to new experiences and didn’t know a lot about the world. Instead of looking for opportunities in life and taking steps in a positive direction to change things, I just waited for things to happen to me. Consequently, I wasn’t really working and was just stuck in the same place. I finally feel that I have started to do something important with my life and that my life has meaning. Now I am a much stronger person than I used to be – I know a lot more about the world and how it works and have a lot of knowledge and skills. I feel much more capable and connected to life around me.
For my volunteer placement, I taught children with learning difficulties. I discovered tha) they are kids who just needed some warmth and personal attention and whose families don’t have the money to pay for this assistance. The volunteering gave me a sense that I have a lot to give to others. It also helped me to love and accept people who are different from me and to be concerned about their needs.
Today I am proud to say that I work with for a company that offers customer security and protection systems. I am in charge of the technical services department. Much of my work is on the computer and I am pleased to tell you that I perform this job with full confidence and a broad knowledge base. Also, thanks to the course's training and support I felt confident to buy a home computer. Now everyone at home has benefited from the course: I teach them what I learned and they enjoy using and discovering the computer on their own.
Being given the opportunity to participate in this program is the most generous gift that anyone has ever offered me in my whole life. I feel so much warmth and love towards the people who made this a reality and offer them my sincerest praise and gratitude.
Today I feel that I am at a totally different place in my life. I have begun on a path that leads me in a very positive direction. Your belief in me caused me to believe in myself and to discover things about myself that were previously hidden. With your assistance in enabling my studies and volunteering, I have been exposed to new and better worlds and have been able to achieve more with my life. As a result of your help, caring and concern, good people like me will also have the chance to succeed. You have given me and many others wonderful opportunities to change their lives.
To all of you who cared enough about us to risk investing in us and to give us new possibilities, I want to take this final opportunity to thank all of you, from the bottom of my heart. Without knowing us, you gave us invaluable opportunities to advance and grow. Your support will accompany and strengthen me for the rest of my life, and I will never forget your contribution to me and my future. A tremendous ‘Yashar Koach’ to you all.
With Gratitude,
Kitra
