Chutes, Ladders, and Gas Masks
JDC, through Ashalim and together with Federation assistance, is making sure Israel's children at risk will be kept safe – and occupied during the long, tense hours – in sealed rooms during war with Iraq. With war set to begin within days, over 230 bags stuffed with toys filled the JDC lobby in Jerusalem, ready for delivery to residential facilities for children at risk throughout Israel. While Twister was not among the contents – too difficult to play in a gas mask – Monopoly, Playdoh and Pictionary for Kids were among the treats in the large green duffel bags. Color-coded ribbons reflected the age-appropriate filling so that JDC's team of volunteers could ensure the suitable bags would be delivered to the proper institutions. Included also were instruction booklets for residential staff, which suggested additional activities – and instructions to be used during a time of crisis. "We hope to use these games only during a time of peace and calm," wrote Shelach of Beit Keshet, a home for teenage girls at risk, in a thank you letter immediately upon receipt of the delivery. But Shelach and the directors of some 200 institutions across Israel will now be prepared for any scenario. Delivered just before Purim, and in time for the outbreak of war, this "mishloach manot" was a welcome gift, to be used by thousands of children across Israel. Funded by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, this initiative is a small – but important – part of a wider JDC effort to help vulnerable populations in Israel, and the professionals who serve them, prepare for war. |
