You have to hand it to Dan Pallotta over at the Harvard Business Review who blogged about the need for nonprofit organizations to reclaim the roots of their work and embrace the label “humanity” sector.

With impassive and defective labels like ‘social’ and ‘nonprofit,’ we distance ourselves from what is truly at stake. We turn life and death into dispassionate jargon … ‘Humanity,’ on the other hand, pulsates with life.

JDC’s work grew out of a humanitarian crisis for Jewish people in 1914 and today we take inspiration from our decades of work helping real people who were suffering unimaginable challenges. From Jewish refugees in Palestine during the first world war… to Holocaust survivors in Displaced Persons (DP) Camps… to Ethiopian Jews starting anew in Israel… to victims of the Tsunami in South Asia … these stories—JDC’s reason d’être—serve as a reminder that nothing we do can be thought of dispassionately.
