Here at JDC we often stress the fact that we endeavor to save lives every day, one person at a time.

The vital importance of each individual’s story, especially among the world’s poverty-stricken Jews, is given a new face in moving and beautifully captured profiles and photos by journalist Judith Matloff in the Forward.

Matloff, who recently traveled to Belarus, introduces the public to some of the former Soviet republic’s poor, elderly Holocaust survivors who are often the last Jews in their remote shtetl.

Looking into their eyes, it’s heartwarming to know that these seniors, despite the odds, are cared for by JDC’s Hesed system with aid from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
