In honor of Tu B’shvat, we’re taking a deeper dive into one aspect of Tikkun Olam Ventures (TOV), JDC’s innovative program that combines Jewish philanthropy and Israeli agricultural know-how to improve the lives of smallholder farmers in Ethiopia.
Launched in October 2018, TOV takes a holistic approach tohelping farmers. A global philanthropic loan fund empowers farmers to use Israeliagricultural technology and new hybrid seeds. Then, when crop yields increase,TOV aids farmers in accessing new markets where they can sell their harvest.
In this video, Ohad Cohen, Trade Commissioner in the Israeli Ministry of Economy & Industry, explains Israel’s role in the program: leveraging Israeli innovation and experience in overcoming a hostile farming environment to help African farmers do the same.
