As guardians of one of the most significant collections in the world for the study of modern Jewish history, the JDC Archives staff knew they had to move quickly to chronicle the unfolding history of the turbulent conflict in Ukraine. Through a grant from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Archives is documenting JDC’s ongoing efforts to help those impacted by the crisis. In addition to their long-term historical significance, these records will inform the organization’s future operations aiding Jews, Jewish communities, and others in distress.

Preserving the historical record in the 21st century means collecting and conserving a variety of media, some of which is new to the JDC Archives — including emails and WhatsApp messages. With the support of the Revson Foundation, JDC is implementing best practices for safeguarding digital materials and gathering first-person accounts of the people and communities helped by the organization as well as the JDC professionals, partners, and volunteers working in the field.
The Revson grant empowers us to embrace innovative methods for capturing and archiving born-digital documentation closer to their creation. This significantly reduces the time required to make these valuable materials accessible to researchers and JDC staff.
Together, we are ensuring this historic and life-saving response in Ukraine is documented in perpetuity.”
